This institution began as a Lunatic asylum in 1871 with 90 beds and was renamed as the Government Mental Hospital initially and later re‐ christened as the Government Hopsital for Mental care (GHMC) in 1950 and 1970 respectively, when the bed strength was enhanced to 300 beds. It is the only tertiary care hosptial for mentally ill patients in entire state of Andhra Pradesh and caters to the needs of mentally ill patients in the neighbouring states of Orissa and Chattisgarh.

The hopsital offers outpatient, inpatient and emergency services through 6 units at GHMC and 1 unit at KGH. Apart from the General Psychiatry services, speciality services like Child Psychiatry, Geriatric psychiatry, De‐addiction and Community psychiatry are also available. Community services are also provided by regular visits of the faculty to the Central prison and the local Mother Theresa home for the destitute. An opiod substitution therapy clinic for treatment of opiod dependance is part of the services provided. Over 86,000 patients were seen at the outpatient department and new cases were over 6000 for the year 2022. Modified ECT, Biogfeedback and counselling services are offered in addition to on site routine blood tests, ECG and X‐ray facilities.

Center for excellence certification was sanctioned to GHMC by the Government of India in 2017.

The Department of Psychiatry of Andhra Medical College Visakhapatnam staff this hospital and offer advanced teaching and training facilitties to undergraduate and postgraduae medical students as well as paraclinical specialties such as Nursing, pharmacy, psychology and social work.
